In 1952, professor Edward W. Gifford from the University of California at Berkley, with the assistance of Richard Shutler Jr., carried out the first large scale archaeological study in New Caledonia. Among the sites tested was site "13" Lapita on the Foué Peninsula, near Koné. Complementing the archaeological material, the team brought back a whole set of colour slides and black and white photographs. The present book, illustrated by the most significant photographs, hopes to bring to life the everyday activities that the American scientists experienced during their stay on the Grande Terre.
